Eleni (Helen) Miliou

Dr Helen Miliou is a Biologist (BSc 1981) with postgraduate studies in Hydrobiology and Aquaculture (MSc 1984, PhD 1990). She is Professor of Applied Hydrobiology and participates in the teaching of undergraduate and postgraduate courses of the Department of Animal Science of Agricultural University of Athens (AUA). She is Vice Rector for European University, Internalization and Student Affairs in AUA (since the beginning of 2023). She was a member of the 1st Council of the Agricultural University of Athens (2013 – 2017).

 

She is the Head of the Laboratory of Applied Hydrobiology (LAH) and director for the Quality System implemented by this lab (ESYD Accreditation Certificate No. 1072-2 according to ELOT EN ISO/IEC 17025:2017). She has published 55 scientific papers in international peer-reviewed scientific journals and 81 in Conference proceedings. She is a regular member of the National Aquaculture Council from 2016-present.

 

She has been Coordinator in seven research funding projects, Principal Investigator of the research carried out by the LAH (AUA) in five projects and Researcher in other seven projects. In addition, she was the Leader of WP4: “Joint Research” in ERASMUS+ project of European University EU-CONEXUS, as well as of WP4: “Research Infrastructures and Resources” in the “Research for Society” HORIZON 2020 project of European University EU-CONEXUS. Currently, she is the Scientific Responsible on behalf of the AUA for the Joint Master’s Degree “Marine Biotechnology” within the framework of EU-CONEXUS, approved as ERASMUS-MUNDUS in 2021. She is also the Leader of WP7: “Research to Education” in EU-CONEXUS Plus (2022-2026) and representative of AUA in EU-CONEXUS Academic Council and Research Council.

 

Her research interests are focused on: a) growth, biometry, metabolism, haematology, population dynamics, stress responses, chemical composition and fatty acid profile of aquatic organisms, b) sustainable aquaculture, c) quality of fishery and aquaculture products, d) welfare of cultured aquatic organisms, e) toxicity effects of pollutants on aquatic organisms, f) nutritional requirements οf cultured fish, g) fish oil and fish meal replacement in aquafeeds, h) flow of energy and nutrients in aquatic ecosystems, i) Integrated Multi-Trophic Aquaculture (IMTA), j) Population dynamics of aquatic animals, k) fish species identification using molecular tools.
